What Does Ethics in the Aviation Profession Mean to Me?
Ethics and professionalism are integral parts of the aeronautics
industry. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, ethics is defined as the
principles of conduct that govern an individual or a group. Basically, ethics
is a set of values that control your actions; whether good or bad the decisions
you choose to make are impacted by the values instilled in you. The values you
hold today are those created by family, from past experiences, and even society.
We all want to be able to say we do the right thing when no one is looking, but
the true action can be more challenging than expected, though exceedingly important
in aviation.
The significance of ethical performance, as an aviation professional
is extremely high ranking. Aviation requires all personnel to maintain keen
levels of detail and a degree of integrity that is unwavering. As critical as
the aviation industry already is, there is not any room for complacency or unthoughtful
actions. Complacency would only bring a higher rate of damage, bodily injury, and/or even death. Various disciplines can fall victim to complacencies such as
pilots, inspectors, and maintenance technicians as well. You must follow the
current technical data for all tasks every time. Having friends and family, we cannot
afford to not adhere to the strict guidelines in place for increasing the
safety of our loved ones.
“The discipline and ethical behavior of professionalism go hand
in hand with safety. You have to do the same thing every flight. There are no
shortcuts.”
Says Jeff Wofford and... he is right.
